What you need to know about Buoyancy Aids

How do I properly fit a buoyancy aid for safety and comfort?

A buoyancy aid only works if it stays on your body. To fit it properly:

  1. Loosen all straps, put it on, and zip/clip it.
  2. Tighten from the bottom up: Secure the waist straps under your ribs first before moving up to the chest.
  3. The Pull Test: Have someone pull up firmly on the shoulder straps. If the vest slides up toward your chin, it’s too loose. It should feel like a firm, secure hug.
What is the difference between a Lifejacket and a Buoyancy Aid?

A Lifejacket is designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water. A Buoyancy Aid (PFD) assumes the wearer is conscious and able to help themselves. PFDs are the standard for paddlesports because they are less bulky, allowing for the full range of motion needed for a deep kayak stroke or a powerful SUP reach.

How do I maintain my buoyancy aid so it lasts?

To ensure the foam stays buoyant and the fabric doesn't degrade, always rinse your PFD in fresh water after use—especially after salt water sessions. Hang it to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for long periods, as UV rays can weaken the materials, and never use it as a cushion to sit on, as this crushes the internal foam.
