Do I need a wetsuit for summer paddling?
Not necessarily, but if you plan on getting in the water as much as on it, a summer suit is a fantastic investment! While technical layers are great for staying dry on the deck, a summer wetsuit is your best friend for swimming, practicing your SUP balance, or paddling when there is a cool breeze. They provide thermal protection and extra buoyancy, ensuring that a quick dip or a change in weather doesn't cut your day short.
What is the difference between a "Shorty" and a Summer Full Suit?
It mostly comes down to personal preference and how much protection you want.
- Shorty Wetsuits: These have short arms and legs, offering maximum freedom of movement and cooling. They are perfect for mid-summer days when you want core warmth but don't want to overheat.
- Summer Full Suits: These are usually 3/2mm thick and cover your arms and legs. These are ideal if you are paddling in slightly cooler coastal waters or want full-body protection from the sun and "paddle splash."
Why should I wear a summer wetsuit instead of just swimwear?
Beyond just keeping you warm, a summer wetsuit offers two major benefits: UV protection and abrasion resistance. Spending hours on a paddleboard or in an open-cockpit kayak exposes you to high levels of reflected sun; a wetsuit acts as a total sunblock. Additionally, the neoprene provides a comfortable cushion against the deck of your board and protects your skin from "board rub" or sand.
